Named for Father John J. Scanlan (see also Parish History)

1907 - 1997

Born in County Cork, Ireland, Bishop Scanlan was ordained a priest in Dublin and came to San Francisco in 1930. He was a longtime priest at Mission Dolores, St. Brigid, and St. Thomas More churches in San Francisco, and also served parishes in Oakland, Berkeley and San Jose. During his 24 years in the Bay Area, he taught high school religion and was director of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Men. Consecrated a bishop in 1954 by the late San Francisco Archbishop John J. Mitty, Bishop Scanlan served as auxiliary bishop and later bishop of Honolulu from 1954 until his retirement in 1981.
