Father Paul
Emmet Duggan died on March 30, 2007, at Saint Mary's
Medical Center in San Francisco. He was 82. Father Paul
was the sixth of seven children raised by Mary Agnes
Considine Duggan and Philip Michael Duggan in Berkeley,
California. Father Paul was one of the siblings who
became priests of the San Francisco Archdiocese. Beloved
brother of Father Eugene F. Duggan, Father William E.
Duggan, and the late Sister Claire Duggan, SNJM, Judge
Rober John Duggan, Lt. Com. Philip Patrick Duggan, USN,
Major Raymond Nicholoas Duggas, USA; nephew of the laste
Father John Francis Duggan, PhD. Survived by many
loveing nieces and nephews.
He
graduated from Saint Augustine's School in Oakland,
Saint Mary College High School, Saint Joseph's College
in Mountain View, and Saint Patrick's Seminary and was
ordained by Archbishop John J. Mitty at Saint Mary's
Cathedral on June 12, 1948.
Father
begain his pastoral ministry as parochial vicar at Saint
Thomas the Apostle Church, Saint Jerome Church in El
Cerrito, and Saint Patrick Church in San Jose. He joined
the faculty of Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo
in 1956. While at Serra, he was accepted into the Air
Force Reserve (Tactial Air Command and 349th Troop
Carrier Wing) at Hamilton Air Force Base. Rising to the
rank of major in the Air Force Reserve, later elevated
to the rank of colonel, Father Paul served over time in
chaplaincy assignments at the Veterans Administration
Center in Los Angeles, the Veterans Administration
Center in Palo alto and Menlo Park, and the Veternas
Administration Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
Father
Duggan was appointed founding pastor of Saint Augustine
Church on July 1, 1970. Following more than eight years
of ministry there, he was appointed pastor of Saint
William Church in Los Altos, Our Lady of Mercy Church in
Daly City, and Saint Cecilia Church in Lagunitas. He
retired from pastoral ministry in 1984, but continued to
serve as an auxiliary chaplain, and later, successfully
defended his dissertation for an STD specializing in
Marian studies from the Pontifical Theological Faculty
Marianum/ International Marian Research Institute
University of Dayton. In recent years, he had resided at
Saint Monica Church and Serra Clergy House before moving
to Alma Via of San Francisco in December, 2004. Friends
may visit Wednesday, April 4th beginning at 10:00am at
St. Thomas More Church, 1300 Junipero Serra Blvd., San
Francisco where a Rosary will be recited at 10:30am,
followed by the celebration of the Mass of the
Resurrection at 11:00am. A Reception will follow.
Interment will take place Thursday at St. Mary's
Cemetery, Oakland. |
