Pax Christi - Day of Information, November 1, 2008

oo Pax Christi, a Catholic peace and nonviolence movement founded after WWII by Bishop Pierre Theas and Marie-Marthe Dortel Claudot of France to work for reconciliation, is now active in over 30 countries and holds consultative status as an NGO at the United Nations. Pax Christi USA was founded in 1972, a country member of Pax Christi International.
In 1990, what is now known as Pax Christi Northern California was founded as a region of Pax Christi USA. The region is a loose affiliation of twenty some Pax Christi groups.

Pax Christi's USA priorities are
  • the spirituality of nonviolence and peacemaking
  • disarmament, demilitarization, and reconciliation with justice
  • economic and interracial justice in the United States
  • Human Rights and global restoration.
Pax Christi USA promotes Christian nonviolence on the personal, communal, national, and international levels. Believing in the gospel call to conversion as found in the Beatitudes, Pax Christi USA denounces and resists the evils of violence while striving to reflect the Peace of Christ.

Pax Christi Northern California supports its chapter members by, among other things, hosting two annual events, a day of information, and a day of prayer.

The photos above were taken on at the November 1, 2008, Day of Information featuring speaker Lorin Peters, a peace activist, teacher of non-violence for 36 years, and a member of Christian peacemaker teams in Israel-Palestine.  His presentation covered

  • Gandhi's rediscovery of non-violence
  • a short history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
  • peacemaking in Palestine
  • issues in peacemaking
